José-Antonio Monteiro is Research Economist in the Economic Research and Statistics Division of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). Besides providing economic advice to dispute settlement panels, he conducts research on international trade issues, including e-commerce. Among other things, he co-authored the WTO/UNCTAD "Advance Guide to Trade Policy Analysis: The Structural Gravity Model". Before joining the WTO, he worked at the International Labour Organization (ILO) in the Trade and Labour Programme, with a particular focus on labour provisions in regional trade agreements. Previously, he also participated in several projects financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) analysing the impact of official aid development on international trade. He holds a PhD in economics, in the area of trade and environment, from the University of Neuchatel (Switzerland), as well as a Master on economics and finance from the University of Geneva (Switzerland).
