The Impact on Global CO₂ Emissions of Geographic Shifts in Global Supply Chains

Abstract

During the past two decades there has been a shift in the geography of Global Supply Chains (GSCs) from developed countries to China, and more recently from China to successor countries in South Asia and Africa. The shift in GSC geography influences greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions because of the gap in energy efficiency and low-carbon technology between developed countries and China, and between China and China’s successor countries. The paper simulates the impact on global GHG emissions of the change in GSC geography in China’s direction. In addition to the direct effect of shifting GSCs on global emissions, there are potentially even larger indirect effects on global emissions. These include trade and infrastructure-related effects on emissions, and improvements in living standards in the developing world that are attributable to the shift of GSCs. The policy implications are briefly discussed at the end of the paper.

主讲人简介：蒋雪梅，首都经济贸易大学经济学院副教授，中国投入产出学会常务理事，中国区域协会空间分析专业委员会委员。于2008年和2011年分别获中国科学院管理科学与工程、荷兰格罗宁根大学经济学博士学位，主要研究领域包括低碳经济、区域投入产出分析、宏观经济数量分析等。目前已出版中英文专著各一本，在国外SSCI/SCI期刊《Energy Economics》、《Global Environmental Change》、《Ecological Economics》、《Regional Studies》等上发表论文20余篇，在国内核心期刊《系统工程理论与实践》、《数量经济与技术经济研究》、《统计研究》、《国际贸易问题》等上发表论文20余篇，主持并参与国家/部级重点项目10余项，所撰写的政策研究报告曾多次获得国家领导人批示。
