Preview and Promotion of the GVC Development Report 2025 at the WTO Public Forum

The Global Value Chain Development Report series, one of the flagship products of our institute, has released four editions since its establishment in 2017. As a public welfare product, it has been promoted globally on the WTO official website and has garnered widespread attention from various sectors due to its international influence. On September 18, 2025, a promotional event for the 2025 Global Value Chain Development Report(hereinafter referred to as the Report 2025) was held at the WTO Public Forum in Geneva, Switzerland. The editor-in-chief of the Report 2025, Robert Koopman—former WTO Chief Economist and Distinguished Professor at our university’s Global Value Chain Institute—meticulously organized the promotional event and delivered a keynote speech. Representatives of various chapters also promoted and discussed related hot topics. This pre-release event received extensive attention and high praise from scholars worldwide.

At 9:00 a.m. local time on September 18, the promotional event for the Report 2025officially began. Ms. Barbara Ramos, Director of Trade and Investment Strategy Policy at the International Trade Centre (ITC), served as the host of the event. She began by introducing the Global Value Chain Development Reportseries and the research themes of each edition to global participants. Professor Robert Koopman, editor-in-chief of the Report 2025, introduced the latest report’s theme, "Re-globalization," and emphasized, "Against the backdrop of trade turbulence, the research significance of the Report 2025is profound. We have identified potential directions for efforts for all countries navigating uncertainty and once again underscored the importance of multilateral cooperation." Subsequently, chapter authors from the Asian Development Bank, the Swiss National Trade Agency, American University, and the University of International Business and Economics—Joseph Mariasingham, Felinda Robert Koopman, and Wang Ran—discussed topics such as "Latest Trends in Global Value Chain Development," "Innovation in International Governance Mechanisms," "Industrial Policy," and "Development of the New Energy Vehicle Industry." Wang Ran, Associate Researcher at our university’s Global Value Chain Institute and author of the new energy vehicle chapter in the Report 2025, shared insights on the role of global new energy vehicle development in promoting digital-real integration and the policy choices for developing countries amid value chain restructuring. During the interactive session, chapter authors addressed audience questions on topics such as "Re-globalization Trends," "Digital-Real Integration," and "Multilateral Governance Systems."Participants in the pre-release event highly praised the research of the Report 2025and expressed great anticipation for its official release.

On the afternoon of September 18, Professor Robert Koopman, editor-in-chief of the Report 2025, and the editorial committee held a progress coordination meeting. The collaborating parties confirmed that the global release of the 2025 Global Value Chain Development Reportwould take place on December 11 in Beijing, December 16 in Geneva, Switzerland, and December 18 in Washington, D.C., USA. Related work is progressing in an orderly manner.

Han Yong, Director-General of the WTO Department of China’s Ministry of Commerce, Professor Ju Jiandong of Tsinghua University’s PBC School of Finance, and Tian Wei, host of China Global Television Network (CGTN), also attended the Public Forum.
