November 5, 2023—The sixth China International Import Expo (CIIE) officially commenced, with its key component, the Hongqiao International Economic Forum, successfully held. During the forum, the flagship report World Openness Report 2023 was released. The report emphasizes that maintaining and expanding global openness still requires joint efforts and mutual cooperation among nations. The Chinese version of the World Openness Report 2023 was published by China Social Sciences Press, while the English version was jointly published by Royal Collins Publishing Group Inc. and China Social Sciences Press.

Professor Xiaopeng Yin , Dean of the Institute, and Associate Researcher Xiuxiu Zheng of our university played a significant role in authoring Chapter 8, "Current Status and Trends of Global Value Chain Development," in the World Openness Report 2023. In this chapter, the authors conducted an in-depth analysis using the Global Value Chain (GVC) database (UIBE GVC Indicator) from the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) Global Value Chain Institute. The chapter explores topics such as "the flourishing development of global value chains in the era of economic globalization," "how GVCs reflect the deepening of international division of labor," "how major economies are embedded in global production networks across different segments," and "sectoral advantages of major economies from a GVC perspective." The authors also propose the viewpoint of "building consensus on openness to promote better GVC development." Global value chains play a crucial role in driving world economic growth, necessitating continued efforts to advance national openness, strengthen regional coordination and cooperation, foster global consensus on openness, and jointly promote the healthy development of GVCs to share the benefits of economic globalization.
The World Openness Report 2023 consists of 11 chapters, with the mission of "building an open world economy." It addresses major changes in the post-pandemic era, focusing on key issues such as openness capacity, openness sectors, openness policies, openness rules, openness and security, the Belt and Road Initiative and the UN 2030 Agenda, the CIIE and openness in developing countries, and high-level openness and Chinese modernization. The report presents a grand narrative of global shared openness. Co-authored by experts from the Institute of World Economics and Politics at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the Hongqiao International Economic Forum Research Center, UIBE, Tsinghua University, the University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and other research institutions, the World Openness Report has garnered increasing attention since its inaugural release in 2021. Over 300 attendees, including political, business, academic, and research representatives from around the world, as well as domestic and international journalists, participated in the World Openness Report 2023 release and international seminar.
